Some movement in the grasses almost to our feet pulled me out of gazing and back into birding mode. These tiny birds were barely distinguishable from the ground – but they were certainly birds. After all, they are annual visitors to my native Trinidad and Tobago. I was surprised at how gently the sun rose.

Ducks and grebes paddled around, Anhingas swam beneath the surface, occasionally appearing with a skewered fish. I had been visiting the ponds for the ducks, but stayed for the general ambience. Perhaps the bird was trying to get a closer view, so as to reference the images of possible threats it learned as a young bird?
