In southern Trinidad, however, there is much more at play than what is immediately discernible. While the P-a-P Wildfowl Trust’s main thrust is the breeding and release of five duck species, the habitat encourages a number of native wetland birds to inhabit and proliferate the area.

I’ve been leading a small but faithful group on Trinidad for several years to count birds within a livestock farm that is generally restricted to the public (you can read about some of those shenanigans here ); this was the first time I was to embark on a CBC on the smaller island of Tobago. Mangrove Cuckoo. Blue-winged Teal.

After all, they are annual visitors to my native Trinidad and Tobago. Closer looks revealed large numbers of White-faced Whistling Ducks as well as a few American Golden-Plovers. I tried waiting for the sun to rise a little more, but by the time it did, it was far too bright to point a long lens at.

The year list to date is 1015 species and 7 have been added to the life list ( 4059 ) from Costa Rica, China and Trinidad and Tobago. 10 Wood Duck – Aix sponsa.

This Black-bellied Whistling Duck was on its way to visit its mate and young brood further afield in the same pond but made a detour. Did the Black-bellied Whistling Duck represent his family, “showing face” as we say here in the Caribbean? Apologies for excluding them from this carousel. Spotted Sandpiper. Paying respects?

Ducks and grebes paddled around, Anhingas swam beneath the surface, occasionally appearing with a skewered fish. I had been visiting the ponds for the ducks, but stayed for the general ambience. Several migratory species were around – I’ll touch on these in a subsequent post – but all was quiet and calm nevertheless.

Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Black-bellied Whistling Ducks in the aftermath of the “storm” Hoping for different fortunes at a different time of day, we stayed until darkness enveloped us but still, nothing.
