If you happen to be driving the highway from the North-west coastal highway towards Marble Bar there are a few obvious places to pull over to bird. Painted Finch collect the charcoal from the fireplaces in the area. There has always been a small pool of water at the causeway when we have visited and it is frequented by many birds.

One of the more vocal birds at the Boab Quarry is the Great Bowerbird. They are often flying about in groups and the bower that has been built to attract female birds is mostly natural items. The Great Bowerbirds only collect white and green, but they have mostly collected white rocks at this location. Common Bronzewing.

On our recent camping and birding trip away we passed through the small town of Fitzroy Crossing, which is the next town along the Great Northern Highway heading north and is approximately 400 kilometres from Broome. The river levels are currently low and offer water to the surrounding birds and wildlife. Great Bowerbird bower.

Lake Corella was formed in 1959 when the Clem Walton Dam was built to collect water for the mining town of Mary Kathleen and is now a popular camping area, especially in the height of tourist season in the cooler months. Corella Dam is a beautiful place to camp and offers a good variety of birds.

Whenever possible we have used our Christmas Day to see how many bird species we can get in our local area and this year was no different.
