Collared Aracari at Finca Luna Nueva Lodge, Costa Rica

Few if any species are as emblematic of the Neotropics as Ramphastidae, the family that includes the toucans, toucanets, and aracaris. Even non-birders can appreciate the huge-billed and colorful birds. On the other, the birds love Pink Banana , and the guests love seeing the birds up close. Yeah, it was a heck of a trip.

Diving New Zealand – Goat Island

Not because you generally see many birds while diving, although the experience of seeing shearwaters flying underwater while cage diving, as I once did, was one I think most birders would enjoy. Diving has taken me to places like Belize, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Egypt, places that coincidentally are fun to bird. Kina, or Sea Urchin.

Homage to Catalonia

In a warm Catalonian March (I was about to say Spanish, but among quite a few flags, I haven’t seen a single Spanish one), Barcelona was filled with sunlight and full of Rose-ringed and Monk Parakeets , two charming but alien and invasive species. Still, the bird isn’t too cooperative, glides low over the ridge and disappears behind it.
