Quarry birding is rewarding anywhere in the world, but in the Kimberley it can often be the last place that birds can find water after months with no rain. This particular quarry north of Fitzroy Crossing was almost dry when we last visited, but not dry enough that there were no birds at all. Zebra Finch.

Anyone with more than a couple of hours to kill could easily make a quick birding foray out from the airport. The birding is not exceptional, but you can easily see some of Singapore’s and South-east Asia’s more common species and it does throw up the occasional jewel. We have observed huge flocks of Galahs there on previous visits and other times there are more bird species, but only one or two of each species. Last Sunday we stopped as usual and we were able to observe a good selection of birds from the bridge. As soon as you get out of your vehicle you can hear birds at this location.

This is cattle country and it is actually fenced, which many parts of the Kimberley are not and you pass through Ruby Plains and then Carranya station to reach the crater. The first bird we observed as we climbed up to the rim was a Black-breasted Buzzard followed shortly afterwards by a Nankeen Kestrel. Wolfe Creek Crater-dangerous!

Whenever you encounter one bird species near the edge of the track it is worth stopping, because invariably there are several species in the vicinity. As soon as you come close to flowering plants there are birds taking off all around you. Grevillea refracta have been flowering for many weeks and the birds are attracted to them.

There have been a lot of different birds around this year for various reasons, which mainly involve the climatic changes we experience from year to year. We have never seen as many Zebra Finches as we have this year and there are a lot more Budgerigars and Diamond Doves in the Broome area. How wrong we were!

The native bushes were full of Zebra Finch, Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch waiting to nip to the water when they felt safe to do so. There were a good variety of birds around the water body and the highlight was our first Black-necked Stork for the year due to our time away for a good part of the year so far.
