Surrounded by coral reefs filled with fish, sea turtles of three species plus the common visits of Manta Rays: it is a pretty exciting place for anyone who likes to skin dive. It is also a great place for the birder for the fish have brought the birds and the island has supplied places to nest. They are everywhere.

The southwest peninsula of Trinidad is unfortunately rarely birded by visiting birders. Bonus points if you figured out that the out-of-focus bird here is a Solitary Sandpiper. We kept our eyes peeled for any birds of prey – Savanna Hawk , Grey-lined Hawk and Common Black Hawk were all expected. Such is birding.

With the aid of marking individual birds, as discussed by Alfredo recently , it is possible to identify individual shorebirds that have been marked with flags either locally or anywhere in the Flyway. Oriental Plover with Greater Sand Plovers , a Lesser Sand Plover in breeding plumage and Red-necked Stint.

This is our thirteenth year of observing Pied Oystercatchers breed along the coast near Broome and it gets easier every year! They always nest from the end of June and they always nest in the same place or within a few metres if there is disturbance around the breeding territory. They are so predictable!
