On Saturday morning I was out on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay with Carlos and Anthony enjoying a mid-September search for shorebirds. We watched the bird for awhile as it foraged and though the injury was painful to contemplate for we humans the bird seemed to be getting by alright. Sadly, the sandpiper was not to survive long.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. Now that passerine migration has largely wound down the attention of this New York birder has shifted to seabirds, shorebirds, and the occasional trip looking for breeding birds. I sat and watched and digiscoped the birds, hoping to pull a Western Sandpiper or a White-rumped Sandpiper out of the teeming hordes with no luck.

Two-thousand-twelve was a pretty darn good year for me birding-wise and otherwise. Seeing 525 species was nice, as was the fact that I birded in four countries, nine of the fifty states in the United States, and fifty-one counties. I went to the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida.

The Cape May Warbler is an outstanding bird and an outing that includes one is almost undoubtedly considered successful. I was fortunate enough to spot the individual in this post at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where it was foraging in bushes and small trees between four and fifteen off of the ground.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. And, the birds are awesome. Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.

That means it is time to look for shorebirds on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay. I saw no rarities but I did see lots of common shorebirds very well and despite the lack of rare birds I enjoyed myself immensely. Stilt Sandpipers were around in numbers and still sporting a nice percentage of breeding plumage.

littoralis is a regular winter visitor in Britain that remains relatively undetected due to the similarity in plumage of most wintering birds to our own resident Rock Pipits A.petrosus. By March though Scandinavian Rock Pipit begins to show some changes into breeding plumage and outs itself as a migrant rather than a resident.

The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage. Not only that, but the birding is typically not great either. The mosquitoes and other biting insects often make natural areas almost unbearable, the heat keeps many breeding songbirds from singing much, and migration doesn’t happen much at all except for southbound shorebirds. Now that’s a nice bird to see!

They are cryptically plumaged birds whose camouflage helps them to blend in with their often arid environments. The Water Thick-knee’s , Burhinus vermiculatus, preference for moist areas may contribute to the eroneous habit of considering them amongst the wading birds.
