The rain made it to Broome!

A local cattle station out of town received 652mm in the same 24 hour period, so we got off lightly! Of course all of the muddy water is already full of tadpoles and therefore the birds are moving in. Meanwhile the birds will make the most of the tadpoles and the large number of grasshoppers that are currently about.

This whole area floods during the wet season and water remains throughout the year most years and attracts a lot of bird-life. It is worth having your windows open as you drive slowly in and check all of the many boab trees for bird-life. All of the surrounding trees, especially if they are in flower, offer a great variety of birds.

Instead of going on about zip lines and other modern, adventure tourism attractions, the birding crowd talks about taking photos of Resplendent Quetzals , seeing dozens of hummingbird species, and the seemingly odd absence of raptors in Costa Rica but nope, we don’t really talk about extinction. Must be a joke, right?

Great Miami Winter Bird Count 2015

For many in the birding community, Miami is a destination meant only for ticking off ABA-countable exotics such as Spot-breasted Oriole or Red-whiskered Bulbul. It was truly heart-warming to see the local birding community participate with so much enthusiasm and fervor. This bird was a life bird for him!
