His discomfort made him fussy, which made getting work done nearly impossible until my husband came home from his job at a nearby wildlife management area. And yet, I miss my family and friends, and grieve for those around the world who are not as lucky as I have been. I don’t mind the bird poop they leave behind!

Most years, a day in January of serious birding around Lake Cuitzeo can give me around 85 species. So up north I go, always hoping for a good harvest of year birds. And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. In fact, that is what I love about birding in January.

Lots of birds, a lot of really cool birds! However, as with many other places throughout the globe, this small country also has its fair share of urban wildlife. Our birding was particularly productive for the Central Valley but still gives an idea of what can be found in and near urban areas of Costa Rica.

This is the area that fostered my lifelong interest in birds. I imagine I have a pretty good idea of what this does to the human inhabitants of the area, but what does it do to the birds? These secretive little marsh birds are rarely found out in the open, like most of the rail family.

It took me a while to wrap my mind around the concept of Birds and People , Mark Cocker and David Tipling’s book that, in 592 pages, explores the intersection of just that—birds and us. Nor have I overlooked “sightings” of birds in movies mouthing other birds’ calls. I’m not sure why.

However, no matter how one enjoys or takes in interest in the avian side of life, an official list of the birds for a given area is of vital importance. With the rise in birding tourism, bird lists for entire countries have also become increasingly important. Not every list has Great Tinamou on it. So long buddy.
