A Near Conjunction

Many friends and guests enjoyed seeing this particular bird soar, hunt, or even sit for hours in the valley. A massive shadow caught our eye on the opposite end, by the time we whispered “ Black Hawk-Eagle ” to each other it already was in view almost overhead. Definitely a hawk-eagle, but which? Was it this bird?

While tracking brown bears in Greece some time ago, B. stood in a heraldic bear pose, on his hind legs, clawing the air and rrrroaring in his best Bearish. With hand signs, the Greek villager showed one large and two small bears nearby, that much I understood. After a drink, they went to see the bears.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Tiger Afternoon

There’s a Sloth Bear in tall, dry grass, barely 50 metres from us, but all we can see is a dark, shape-shifting shadow that eventually becomes all but invisible. At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. The Telia Lake.

The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

It’s the boar hunting season. The WBW remained elusive like a bear (for me at least – a month ago, Georgos met a mother with two cubs, took a few photos, then dropped down and played dead). By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air!

The name “Harpy Eagle” was coined by South American explorers, and is based on the harpies of Greek Mythology. A Harpy Eagle. At 3-4 inches long , they rival those of the great Grizzly Bear, and allow the Harpy Eagles to go after prey unavailable to many other birds.

A Brief Coastal Visit to Oz

There are a few special wave-cut platforms that prove to be wonderful habitat for such species as Eastern Reef Egret, Silver Gull, Crested Tern, Sooty Oystercatcher [below], Pied Cormorant while above sail raptors such as Osprey, White bellied Sea-eagle, Brahminy and Whistling Kites. One is pictured below.
