A narrow forest road takes us to the chain blocking the entrance, with a sign “Area closed – bear danger”. This feeding station is not here for the tourists: in order to lower the bee-hive raiding (even the Serbian word for a bear, medved, comes from the word honey – med), supplementary feeding was offered to local bears for several decades.

It is not quite clear why they do this as it apparently does not affect breeding success. They have written a paper on the “Feasibility of counting breeding Pied Avocets and Black-winged Stilts using drones” It seems to work, actually – though about 20 percent of breeding pairs are being missed by drone surveys.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is also home to approximately 57 species of mammals ranging in size from the tiny shrew to the North American black bear. It is just a short distance from the Lassen Peak Trailhead as you can see from the interactive map accessible from the left hand column of the Lassen Park website.

Add more than 350 pairs of White Pelicans to that picture, numerous herons and up to 700 pairs of Pygmy Cormorants breeding in the same reedbeds (cover photo)… It must be bursting with activity in spring, but I was there in mid-September. Have you heard of it? Can you pinpoint it on a map?

According to their website , Lassen Volcanic National Park provides habitat for approximately 216 species of birds in which 96 have been known to actually breed in the park. Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of the few places that this incredible cavity nesting duck breeds in Northern California.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The mosaic of wetlands, open water, bottomland forests and prairies provides habitat for numerous mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and nearly three hundred bird species.

There are 11 species of birds that breed in the Ross Sea region. The most numerous penguins are Emperor and Adélie Penguins , with 26 and 38 percent of the world’s population breeding in the Ross Sea, respectively. On the Balleny Islands Antarctic Fulmar , Antarctic Prion and Cape Petrel also breed. And the Mammals.
