Birding the Bear Mountain of Serbia

10,000 Birds

A narrow forest road takes us to the chain blocking the entrance, with a sign “Area closed – bear danger”. This feeding station is not here for the tourists: in order to lower the bee-hive raiding (even the Serbian word for a bear, medved, comes from the word honey – med), supplementary feeding was offered to local bears for several decades.

Fur and Fangs rather than Feathers and Beaks

10,000 Birds

Memorable encounters with Mammals: Part I Most birdwatchers enjoy seeing mammals, but the trouble with mammals is that they tend to be much more challenging to see than birds. On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals.

Spectacled Bears at Machu Picchu

10,000 Birds

A detailed post on this incredible rally is already overdue but in the meantime I felt the need to share a once-in-a-lifetime sighting of one of the scarcest mammals in South America. This is a mammal that I have been yearning to see properly in the wild, having only once caught a brief distant glimpse in Ecuador on a previous adventure.

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge Black Bears

10,000 Birds

Though I grew up where the Hudson Valley meets the Catskill Mountains, in the heart of Black Bear country, I can count my encounters with said bears on the fingers of one hand. In my later teenage years I saw a bear or a mother-and-cub pair three times when I was behind the wheel of my car. That’s a big bear!

A Photographic Guide to the Wildlife of India

10,000 Birds

At the end there are separate indexes for birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, and trees and shrubs. And chapters on geography, habitats and national parks could really use maps to help you get your bearings. The size and weight of this guide is moderate and manageable (I travelled with heavier bird guides).

Birding Dulan County, Qinghai

10,000 Birds

Good for animals, of course – particularly some shy mammals. Therefore, apologies in advance for the largish number of mammal photos in this post. Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. A juvenile nearby. This is a truly miserable-looking Upland Buzzard.
