Birding Yancheng, Jiangsu

10,000 Birds

While these birds are very much liked by Chinese birders, the species could unfortunately not be named the National Bird of China as the Latin species name of the bird is Grus Japonicus. it would not be the national bird of the USA either. Incompetent photographers can always blame the bird.

Birding Ruoergai, Sichuan, China

10,000 Birds

The poster bird of this area is the near-threatened Black-necked Crane. Not sure how I (or the bird itself) feel about the bird being named after a bird collector, though. A beautiful bird, but a disastrous name, if even some of the accusations against Przevalski of him being a massive racist are true.

Birding Chongming Island in summer

10,000 Birds

Not professionally – these people come in SUVs and probably never recapture their gas money from the fish they catch (though come to think of it, neither do I with my bird photos). Grasshopper Buffet

10,000 Birds

Most often encountered near to the village bearing the same name, this abundant grasshopper ultimately sprouts large wings and forms swarms which can decimate crops. This has obviously involved the active targeting of Moruga Grasshopper eggs and young, and an all-out attack involving chemical warfare. Naturally, I had to investigate.

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

The main attraction for birders here are the hornbills – I have written about them before , so this post will be more on the other birds I saw there in 2017. The Blue Whistling Thrush is presumably named for its loud human-like whistling, and possibly for being blue. “It is not deep enough yet!

How to find the Ural Owl in Serbia

10,000 Birds

But I was driving too fast and passed it, so I had to uncomfortably break on moist and somewhat slippery road to reverse and to stop opposite to the bird, less than 4 metres from it. The bird tolerated us for perhaps a dozen seconds before it majestically took off. Absolutely thrilled! Cover photo by Snezana & Slobodan Panjkovic.

Some common birds of Shennongjia, China

10,000 Birds

I also only managed to see rather common bird species at Shennongjia, a nature reserve in Hubei province, China. If this does not put you off from reading this post, you are hopeless anyway, so just proceed … The Brown-breasted Bulbul might well be the most common bird at Shennongjia, so it seems appropriate to start with it.
