Keep birding and you might see a White-tailed Kite hovering as it hunts rodents and one of the few Bat Falcons in the Valley might dash into view. Lesser numbers of other common birds also occur; birds like the Gray-crowned Yellowthroat , Inca Doves , saltators, Groove-billed Anis , and other species.

It’s last island habitat, Big South Cape Island, had succumbed to invasive rats, which were wiping out the saddlback, along with the Greater Short-tailed Bat, Bush Wren and South Island Snipe, all of which were also making their last stand on the island.

were the site which the nasty hemorrhagic fever Marburg jumped from Egyptian Fruit Bats to some unlucky tourists visiting the caves. Egyptian Fruit Bats. And then there’s the bats. And for all that I am playing with how dangerous these bats are, the fact is they probably aren’t. This is as close as we got.

Through the Rat-penat houses, enveloped in their lush green gardens, the road winds up the edge of a limestone gorge towards the Garraf nature park (pronounced a bit like barking, garrrrAf). The dirt road winds along hillsides, next to vineyards and through the pine forest with a lot of bat boxes. Enough is enough.

This is quite a big deal for an island group that had no mammals save bats for millions of years. Take a project to remove rats from the Californian island of Anacapa (in the Channel Islands). The island was home to an important population of Xantus’ Murrelet , but the population was suffering as a result of introduced rats.
