In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically. I’ve also sat for hours in unabated hides in Bulgaria where it’s a matter of luck whether you see a bear or not. in the evening.

Bear in mind, even the plants have to find ways to survive, so virtually every one of them has some form of thorny defense. The Elephant Cactus , puts out a white tubular flower that open from late March, until early, June, and are visited by nectar feeding bats at night and many birds during the day.

A squirrel skittered by … a squirrel is not a bird. Those mammals consist of the previously mentioned fossorial members of Insectivora, Rodents, and bats. I was looking out a car window the other day and noticed that of all the wildlife most of it was bird.

Warblers, orioles, kinglets and gnatcatchers have all been seen as have small mammals such as Pine Martins, bats and Red Squirrels but seldom, it seems, is the behaviour documented. I changed to a position further up the slope which allowed me to get a better angle on the top of the branch and bear out my supposition.

But I did pick up some astonishing species, including five broadbills, three pittas, six hornbills, the Storm’s Stork , White-fronted Falconet , Pygmy Ibon , Mountain Black-eye , Mountain Serpent Eagle and Bat Hawk. The entrance to hell has a walkway. Danum Valley. You need to go to the Borneo Rainforest Lodge.
