Just yesterday I learned that the Barn Owl ( Tyto alba ) is the only breeding bird found in New York that has been documented nesting in every month of the year. This bit of trivia was given in an article in my local bird club’s monthly newsletter about the ongoing breeding bird atlas in New York State.

Lifer! But, which one?

Along with the Sedge/Grass Wrens Ignacio had reported, he had also posted some fine photos of a Great Horned Owl that had roosted on his property. I hardly ever see owls, except for Ferruginous Pygmy Owls , so this was another big draw for me. That’s 100% Barn Owl butt, right there.

Yet Another New Backyard

Even having a conversation at night can prove difficult, as we are often interrupted by the wail of a Common Potoo , or the intermittent hooting of a Tropical Screech-Owl. Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls are fairly common as well, only last night a Barn Owl shrieked as it flew over.

A Gentlemen’s Big Day’s Birding

Actually we couldn’t be seen, as it was still too dark, but we did hear a couple of birds to start the day: Tawny Owl and Cetti’s Warbler. This fen has breeding Marsh Harriers, and we saw at least three different birds, while Cuckoos called close by. The latter was a bonus bird that we hadn’t anticipated.
