The area is used as a hunting ground for large raptors including the White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Brahminy Kite. Our observations recently have shown that the adult Pied Oystercatchers are roosting amongst the shorebirds where possible and it may well protect the juvenile Pied Oystercatchers. Reportedly, the Water Thick-knee sometimes locates its nest close to the nest of Nile crocodiles as this offers some protection. While hoopoes are in their own family, DNA studies suggest that the hoopoe diverged from hornbills, and the wood-hoopoes and scimitarbills from the hoopoe.

Couas and koels are both cuckoos, saw-wings are swallows and logrunners are an odd unique thing from Australia who’s only relative is the charmingly named Chowchilla). I’d never heard of them until 2005 when I saw some in the Botanical Gardens of Canberra in Australia. What, exactly, is a pardalote? A Spotted Pardalote !

The view from Sayer Road used to be very open and offered little protection many years ago and we contributed to the planting of small native trees in 1998 when we lived in Palmerston. There were good numbers of Green Pygmy-geese, Comb-crested Jacana, Great and Intermediate Egrets, Magpie Geese and a family of Black-necked Storks.

This park, which protects scattered headlands, bays and islands of natural bush, is located around the entrance to Sydney Harbour. Dobroyd Head, the section in Balgowlah near where my grandparents live, protects one of the larger parts of the park, and is a hidden gem of birdwatching in Sydney.
