Pied Oystercatchers breeding in Roebuck Bay

The area is used as a hunting ground for large raptors including the White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Brahminy Kite. Our observations recently have shown that the adult Pied Oystercatchers are roosting amongst the shorebirds where possible and it may well protect the juvenile Pied Oystercatchers.

Reportedly, the Water Thick-knee sometimes locates its nest close to the nest of Nile crocodiles as this offers some protection. A bit like renting an apartment next to a mass murderer in the hope that this will deter other criminals, but as they say, nature knows best.

A Brief Coastal Visit to Oz

As my opening word suggests; the Sunshine Coast is located in Australia as the attached Google map illustrates. As in North America this tattler loves the rockier outcrops down here in Australia too. We were also lucky enough to see a beautiful pair of Sacred Kingfishers hunting along the coastal edge. One is pictured below.
