So yes, I needed to see this beast, this flying door, this scourge of all things’ geese, this modern Roc. Skeins of Greylag Geese completed the picture. However, the engineers had to do their engineering so ever since the 70’s the water levels have been controlled up or down and large grazing animals have been released.

Joseph Chiera is a Masters student in Animal Behavior and Conservation at Hunter College in NYC and a “somewhat newbie” to birding. You can take in views of waterfowl including Eurasian Wigeon , Barnacle Geese , Trumpeter Swan , and a plethora of ducks and gulls. From the top it became clear why this was such a popular birding spot.

This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. Nearly 30,000 of these acres is set aside as dry wilderness habitat for other birds, animals and other various living creatures. Did I mention that they were a couple of hundred yards out there?

New Zealand had, once upon a time, some fairly spectacular game birds, including massive flightless geese, massive flightles rails, and really enormous moa. Species can arise by hybridization – the Italian Sparrow is thought to be one. Genetic studies have suggested that some birds are hard to place as having hybrid ancestors.

Crows, Ravens, Clark’s Nutcrackers, White-crowned Sparrows and assorted waterfowl were all still present, but that was about it. This can cause up to 20 minute waits, which I put to good use, tracking down this nice shot of a White-crowned Sparrow. Here are the rest of the animals that we did see.

Swan : “any of various large heavy-bodied long-necked mostly pure white aquatic birds (family Anatidae, especially genus Cygnus ) that have webbed feet and are related to but larger than the geese.”. Many individual species get an entry too, though they are generally not capitalized.
