The Great Elephant Census found that populations of Savanna Elephants Loxodonta africana have fallen by 30% between 2007 and 2014 (around 144,000 animals poached or population shrunk at a rate of 8% a year, a level higher than their reproduction rate; source https://peerj.com/articles/2354.pdf That was my first Savanna Elephant in the wild.

For me, the focus on culture and tradition is basically an excuse for "anything goes" when it comes to animals. Are the kids cooking monkey, cat, dog, alligator or turtle? I wonder how much they learn about the animals other cultures eat. (In But I bet anything doesn't go. Any other factories on the agenda?

Sometimes in a forest you’d be forgiven for thinking there was nothing but birds, monkeys and squirrels (and mosquitos, obviously), and then at night you start seeing civets, wallabies, and tarantulas. It brings mammals, and frogs in profusion, and reptiles, and insects. So many insects. And spiders, and scorpions.

We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family. We spotted a young Leopard and his mother in Mago National Park.

One of the nice features of the island is a short mangrove broadwalk from which you can watch fish, crabs and several Banded Rails. Searching for kiwi is unlike spotlighting that I’ve done while looking for nocturnal animals in the past. Soon it became dark, and we slowly walked down the paths ringing the island.

For example, “the Ungulata include hooved animals with multi-chambered stomachs, except the whales.”. Some sort of ancient fish-with-feet is the ancestors of humans. Therefore, humans are fish with feet, right? For example, it would make a huge amount of sense for suspensory feeding monkeys to have six, not four, limbs.

The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here. It was completely unharmed as the hunter had climbed a tree to catch it, so we agreed to purchase the poor animal and after taking a few images and ensuring the hunter was gone, we released it and with mixed emotions watched as it climbed high into a massive tree.
