Twice in the past 24 hours (once here and once on Stephanie's blog, in the comments )I have come across the following statement: "[insert animal here] are safe from predators, get fed regularly, and are better off on farms than if they were in 'the wild.'" The animals on farms are created for the sole purpose of human consumption.

There is a rational, and for some people a spiritual, case for being a vegetarian: Killing animals is wrong. I repeat: If you eat meat (I'd say: products that come from animals) , you cannot logically find it morally or ethically repugnant to eat a particular meat (i.e., product that comes from an animal ). The theory is sound.

One manager told PETA Eats that most people prefer the vegetarian lettuce wraps over those with chicken. Vegans are people who don't eat any animal products, and that includes foods that have been processed with sugar that is made with bone char. Everything else has chicken stock, oyster sauce or non-vegan sugar.

I was thinking about the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary calendar of rescued animals photographed by Deb Durant that's on my refrigerator. It's on the refrigerator, but when you open the refrigerator door you'll see nothing that came from the animals in the calendar. People flock to photos and calendars on refrigerators.

Usually not one to chicken out, the worried and concerned looks on their faces told me not to ignore the advice. All bird and animal pictures are Brad’s. My hosts, obviously knowing their countrymen better than I do, strongly advised me not to get out of the car. Instead, we should head back to civilisation. I can recommend it.

In my earlier post "Children and Heart Disease" available here , I noted that, in the seventh and final edition of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care: A Handbook for Parents of the Developing Child from Birth to Adolescence , Dr. Benjamin Spock no longer recommends feeding animal products to children after two years of age. Pros – it’s big, doesn’t look too much like a chicken, tastes good, is found in most of Oz and has some experience of the job. Pros – it can kill you (like most proper Australian animals), is essentially a dinosaur. I learnt this week that this bird is also known as a bin chicken.
