I was looking out a car window the other day and noticed that of all the wildlife most of it was bird. A squirrel skittered by … a squirrel is not a bird. Herdsman Lake is very good if you only have access to public transport and will offer great birds like Blue-billed Ducks and Musk Ducks , but if you have a vehicle you should try and visit the Perth Hills National Parks and also Yanchep National Park. The water level does vary year by year and as such the bird-life also varies.

Near the town of Mareeba in the centre of the Tablelands, I didn’t visit it for birds, but instead to see a representative of that most Australian of animals, the kangaroo. The male in the shade He soon came out to see me though The feet of rock wallabies are relatively short for macropods (kangaroos and wallabies).

Whether you enjoy hiking, birding or cycling there is something for everyone. There were many birds high up in the trees in the Perth Hills and it made for challenging birding! The picnic area offers good opportunities to encounter Grey Kangaroos and they are particularly large animals.
