It is free to enter Serendip Sanctuary and as you drive or walk up the road into the parking area there are opportunities to see kangaroos and wallabies as you can see above. You are then able to appreciate the birds of the woodlands and wetlands. You can move carefully and get some sky behind the birds and then they become clearer!

I was looking out a car window the other day and noticed that of all the wildlife most of it was bird. A squirrel skittered by … a squirrel is not a bird. After publishing my stories I got emails from people all over the world who had seen similar behavior in various birds and mammals. These birds can learn to pull a string to retrieve a short stick, use the stick to pull out a longer one, then use the long stick to draw out a piece of meat. Empathy Among Elephants.

The bird life certainly changes a bit, with a complete lack of water, unless you are at a town, well, or station, as many of the ranches are referred to. I guess this a great reason to come back and find that bird again… we will call that the silver lining in a major screw up. The second half of our week was spent in Sydney.

Whether you enjoy hiking, birding or cycling there is something for everyone. There were many birds high up in the trees in the Perth Hills and it made for challenging birding! The picnic area offers good opportunities to encounter Grey Kangaroos and they are particularly large animals.

Herdsman Lake is very good if you only have access to public transport and will offer great birds like Blue-billed Ducks and Musk Ducks , but if you have a vehicle you should try and visit the Perth Hills National Parks and also Yanchep National Park. The water level does vary year by year and as such the bird-life also varies.

Most of the birds in the area were well above ground level! There were some reeds remaining as well and enough water to sustain a substantial amount of bird life and wildlife. Western Grey Kangaroo. The bird-life was quite sparse, but we did add Grey Fantail to the year list. Galah above our camp. Feral bees.

Near the town of Mareeba in the centre of the Tablelands, I didn’t visit it for birds, but instead to see a representative of that most Australian of animals, the kangaroo. The male in the shade He soon came out to see me though The feet of rock wallabies are relatively short for macropods (kangaroos and wallabies).

The New Holland Honeyeater , Phylidonyris novaehollandiae , is a sedentary bird so can be seen in its black, white and yellow, year round within its range. It is close to the small town of the same name on the coast of the Indian Ocean, it was our first stop on a nearly 2000 km trip north from Perth, and while it didn’t hold many birds, it certainly provided scenery in abundance. We didn’t see much wildlife but there were Red Kangaroos, Willy Wagtails and an Australian Darter .

My trip wasn’t touristy but I was able to sneak off late one afternoon and early one morning to do a bit of woodland birding at a location called Campbell Park. As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. Campbell Park, Canberra.

As usual, birds seem to like these off-the-way places best – eBird lists 337 species based on a little more than just 100 checklists. So if for example, you look for Asian Pied Starling , you get “No matches” even though this is the exact name used on several other bird pages and in many bird guides.

It is these forests, and not the wetlands I have spoken of before , that hold the many endemics that make the Atherton Tableland such a rewarding place to go birding. Mt Hypipamee A beautiful forest part in the southern part of the Tableland, it is perhaps one of the most rewarding places to bird in the area.
