The boat is called the Legacy and it is an 80 foot whale watching vessel that generally seats 115, but takes about 70 for birding trips. If I saw that bird, I did not appreciate it, so it is not on my list. My recollection of prior trips is that we used relatively small fishing boats and had 20-25 birders, plus the leaders.

One time I did see tem was with the aid of night vision gear – certainly unusual birding, and the air I photographed here were an early arrival found during routine maintenance of their nesting boxes, a lucky find! Pretty neat bird though. An adult Black-footed Albatross loafing in the evening and failing to fly to California.

The species ranges widely across the Pacific, as its scientific name suggests, from the Revillagigedo Islands off Mexico to the Japanese Bonin Islands to New South Wales in Australia. Birds in the southern Pacific and Indian Oceans are predominately dark, however. Intermediate birds can also occur, like this one.

Many state listers immediately chased it even though the bird was very mobile and did not offer good looks for most who tried. Also, tropical waters lack the dynamics for significant upwellings of cold, nutrient rich water to reach the surface and feed the extreme density of plankton that feed the vast schools of fish these birds rely upon.

Here in Portland, Oregon, it is more frequently too rainy rather than too cold to go birding, at least comfortably. Thus, my “good birds” are likely the opposite of an eastern birder.

The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds.
