The Weekly Reader had shocked everyone in class with news of Bald Eagles dying – and humans were to blame! Eleven million gallons of oil suffocated 1,300 miles of shoreline in my beloved Alaska. My first ‘protest’ memory involved putting pencil to notebook paper and writing the President about the harmful effects of DDT.

Another example would be the Eagle Lady in Alaska. Jean Keane lived in Home and one day she noticed a couple of eagles near her home, started to put out some fish for them and then several years later she’s a hot tourist attraction using a stockpile of freezer burned fish from a local company to feed over 200 Bald Eagles a day.

For example, I’ve seen Bald Eagles in 15 states. I don’t think I have added any new species, but I did add Alaska, Kansas, and Oklahoma to the group state list. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve only had one checklist for both Mountain Plover and Northern Goshawk , among many others. Of course, you can use the data in many ways.

Bald Eagle, Head Portraits, Birds of Prey of the East. Bald Eagle has been moved next to Golden Eagle. And, Eagles, surprisingly, don’t either, the emphasis being on their heads, tails, and how they look in flight. And, the Osprey and Eagle heads. Particularly the wing windows.

For example, not much can beat the experience of seeing a Bald Eagle scare up thousands of Snow Geese at Sacramento NWR. Nome, Alaska. Of course, there are also many potential lifers that are essentially impossible to see in outside of Alaska, at least in the United States. And when else would I ever get to see Nome?

There are quite a few records from Alaska, mostly in fall, and a scattering of records on the east coast, mainly in spring. We saw Sandhill Cranes , Northern Shovelers , and Bald Eagles. I’d only ever seen Garganey once before, way back in 2009 in Kazakhstan. Its a Eurasian bird, migrating from Africa and south Asia every spring.

Crested Auklets form some of the biggest, most impressive flocks and formations that I have ever seen, on islands in Alaska. Ross Perot once said “Eagles don’t flock, you have to find them one at a time.” Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Look carefully and you can pick out some Least Auklets as well.

Alaska’s long-lining fleet now must have bird-deterrent measures in place, which means a lot more Laysan, Black-footed and Short-tailed Albatross are not being injured or drowned in fishing gear. The first obstacle was getting to the general range of the species, which is the west coast from northern California to Alaska and across to Russia.* Bald Eagles competed with hauled out Harbor Seals for our attention and we were told that the concentration of eagles was due to the salmon not yet running in the rivers.

Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit recently decided that the Sonoran Desert population of Bald Eagle is not a listable taxon under the Endangered Species Act. The Bald Eagle is one of the true American conservation success stories: the iconic national bird was listed in 1967 when there were less than 500 breeding pairs in the lower 48.

Jason broke new ground in Alaska, adding Marbled Murrulet and bringing the Upper 1 to 1. Black Eagle – Ictinaetus malaiensis. Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle – Nisaetus alboniger. Crested Serpent-Eagle – Spilornis cheela. Ayres’s Hawk-Eagle – Hieraaetus ayresii. Still all mainland though.

They can be found in every state except Alaska (but see the comments below!). Benjamin Franklin disapproved of the selection of the Bald Eagle as our national bird, calling it “a Bird of bad moral Character.” Today, there are probably more than 7 million wild turkeys. They can run as fast as 20 miles per hour.
