When is a Vulture Not a Vulture?

Here in Mexico, I can almost always count on Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures to pad each outing’s list by two species. Alas, although I was once a California boy, I have never seen a California Condor. Turkey Vultures have a wingspan and weight similar to that of Egyptian Vultures. Which I find fascinating.

Consolation species

That trip was to take my wife and I to Turkey, Jordan, and southern Spain, with stopovers near Paris. But, alas, the Novel Coronavirus did not respect my plans. I am always delighted to spot a Zone-tailed Hawk , since this raptor is such an expert at hiding among our always-common Turkey Vultures.

In the Flesh: Griffon Vultures

Alas, it was not to be. A Turkey Vulture might be an avatar of death come to call, while a Griffon Vulture is heartily alive and looking to mug you for your meat. In fact, I believe that I may, possibly, have sent my boyfriend a chat message containing just that one word and and exclamation point. Lammergeyers!

Two Purple Gallinules , two Limpkins … Raptors included Turkey Vultures , Ospreys , White-tailed , Grey-headed (so well seen in a nearby tree!) Several Southern Lapwings and American Black Vultures on a small mudbar, and something smaller in front of them – two locally rare Short-billed Dowitchers.

Many of them are heavenly islands, alas, with 100 or less bird species. Turkey (390 / 459). Which leaves me with quite a few choices – practically the entire tropical belt, right? Out of almost 200 countries of the World, more than 100 are in the tropics. Some regions are politically unstable, e.g. most of Central and Western Africa.

Welcome Back Waterfowl at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge

Beyond the Red-tails, we spotted late Rough-legged Hawks , Turkey Vultures , an American Kestrel and a couple of other falcons too high to id properly (both Peregrine and Prairie are possible here), and, confirming that once you see a nemesis you see it everywhere, two Golden Eagles.

In this case, clearly eagles aren’t always hidden, warblers aren’t always yellow, buntings aren’t always close-up (alas), and plovers aren’t always piping. C) it’s hard to soar with the hawks at a distance when you’re surrounded by turkeys. (D)
