Africa, the world’s second largest and second-most-populous continent, is incredibly diverse. Africa supports roughly a quarter of the planet’s animal and plant species due to its equally diverse natural landscapes and biomes, which range from arid deserts and grasslands to tropical rainforests and ice-capped mountains.

The history of Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa is a slightly unusual one. But it wasn’t founded to serve as a refuge for human refugees, but animal ones, specifically elephants. The park did have a pack of African Wild Dogs, or Painted Wolves, the species I had gone to Africa to see.

This spurred her to pursue a career in environmental education and wildlife nature tourism as a park ranger in Texas and as the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail Coordinator with Florida Fish and Wildlife. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013.

They are being moved to a wildlife sanctuary. From Wildlife Extra News. Jason Bell-Leask, IFAW Director Southern Africa} said "For years the herd has been maimed by local villagers, sometimes using appallingly cruel methods to protect their crops and granaries from raids by the elephants.

It all seems like such a charmed life … until you have to fly down to Africa for the winter. Fish and Wildlife Service, the American Bird Conservancy, and other groups teamed up to translocate 50 of the birds to another island, Laysan. Thanks to a little human intervention, the future looks much brighter for Millerbirds.

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites). I also blogged about that dreamy day. Travel is good for the birding soul.

Geladas are the sole survivors of a once abundant branch of primates that historically foraged across the grasslands of Africa, the Mediterranean and India. they are the most terrestrial primate after humans. This has resulted in their populations returning to natural levels and their fear of humans being curtailed.
