Feral Cats Are An Invasive Species in North America (and elsewhere)

I once knew a guy who kept and raised cats. Also, feral Cats on islands seem to be a serious problem, causing the extirpation of some indigenous species. A hungry feral Cat in Minnesota goes and finds new prey in an area it previously had not explored, leaving the last few of one or another bird species alone for a while.

It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. In three cases of adoption the common factor was that the adopting individual was sexually attracted to one of the real parents of the young.

An Englishman’s home……

The Black Swans were adopted to the trust’s coat of arms and breed here during the northern winter. Strangely, the Indian Peafowl is not mentioned on eBird’s Hotspot list which shows the 67 species that have been seen there. A few other remnants of the former collections might raise eyebrows in some circles.

The Famous Grouse brand was founded in 1896 in Perth and adopted its now-legendary grouse logo sometime in the early twentieth century, an image first drawn by Phillippa Gloag, the daughter of the company owner. After all, it’s the famous grouse, leaving no room in this lek for any pretenders to the throne.

Happy New Year?

While this allows for the delightful prospect of Thanksgivingakkah, with attendant turkey dreidels and whatnot, it does raise certain perennial questions of the nature of time itself, as applied to birding. Rosh Hashanah, the New Year of the Jewish calendar, has come relatively early season-wise this year. It’s a good time.
