Owling in Trinidad & Tobago

10,000 Birds

Some of my earliest bird-related memories (what other memories even exist?) Today, Barn Owls can be found across both islands, hunting open fields at twilight or comfortably resting in abandoned relics of the sugar cane industry. Visitors to the Caroni Bird Sanctuary can often see a pair roosting together in the mangrove.

Post Apocalyptic Steampunk Birding

10,000 Birds

Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. The subtle white edging to the gape of this bird indicates it is near breeding time.

Paradise Regained

10,000 Birds

Among all the birding locations I have found, Pino Real was my first love. I was just getting back into birding, and had only gone to some urban sites, during 2012 and 2013. And this was once a wonderful patch of bird-rich understory. I would have guessed it would be the first species to abandon this now-disturbed site.

Midsummer’s Bird and Some Thoughts on Naming

10,000 Birds

I’ve seen Yellow Warblers in the low shrubs of Western New York pastures, the river valleys of Missoula, and the trees of abandoned industrial sites in New York City. Chuk makes his quip about the Black-winged Yellow Bird; my friend Molly insists that everything is a duck, a pigeon, or an owl.

A Bird Sings in Camden

10,000 Birds

Camden is the poster child for the post industrial collapse of American urban areas. The urban decay means that many buildings are abandoned and boarded up, streets are so poorly maintained that potholes large enough to swallow a car are everywhere, and it is not the most unusual situation, as I learned, to be offered heroin.
