The Andean Flamingo ( Phoenicopterus andinus ) is one of the three flamingos occurring in the high Andes of South America. Egg harvesting to sell as food was intensive then, with thousands taken annually from the breeding colonies in Chile. It is the largest and easiest to identify in all age stages.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). One White-eyed Buzzard has turned its back to us. It is too early to show.

Especially the bird breeding season, which passes by at the blink of an eye. Most troubling for me, because I think of them as my birds, is the abandoned nesting attempt by a pair of Pacific Loons. This pair first appeared four years ago, and are amongst the most northerly known breeding Pacific Loons in North America.

I’ve seen Yellow Warblers in the low shrubs of Western New York pastures, the river valleys of Missoula, and the trees of abandoned industrial sites in New York City. In North America, that is. They are not shy, not given to skulking in dense underbrush or retreating to the crowns of great trees.

While the native apple snail continued declining, another species of apple snail native to South America began to appear in canals and ponds in South Florida. Snail Kites now favor these ponds and breed around them. The baseball-sized “Island apple snail”, as this exotic snail is known, spreaded through South Florida.

They have expanded their range through Indonesia and into Australia and is found in post breeding dispersal as far north as South Korea and Japan. But while their range expansion in the old world was made up of relatively short hops no one expected this species to move westward across the Atlantic Ocean to South America but it did just that!
