I have encountered a few of the more quirky members of the family, including the brilliant and aptly-named African Emerald Cuckoo, India’s ultra-shy Sirkeer Malkoha, and the fascinating Lesser Ground Cuckoo in Costa Rica. It reminded me of a Roadrunner, which is, of course, also a member of the cuckoo family.

It’s a family vacation, sure, but there’s always time for birding and in Florida, the birding often finds you. Cape Coral has a remarkable population of Burrowing Owls , cute little stilt-legged beasts we usually associate with the western part of the continent. But daytime owls always look miffed about something.

To round up the day, in our base-village of Chrisochorafa, we later had one adorable Little Owl just a few hundred metres from our hotel. I went to explore the best birding area of the national park, the legendary eastern levee, and this day started with another Little Owl in the next village.

I’ve seen Yellow Warblers in the low shrubs of Western New York pastures, the river valleys of Missoula, and the trees of abandoned industrial sites in New York City. Chuk makes his quip about the Black-winged Yellow Bird; my friend Molly insists that everything is a duck, a pigeon, or an owl.

When that isn’t possible, many raptor rehabbers keep tabs on nests and will place an abandon chick in a foster nest. Owls are a little different. They don’t build nests and some like Great Horned Owls take over old hawk or squirrel nests. Try to get it too another family group or contact a wildlife rehabber.
