Yet, with a coffee in one and binoculars in my other hand, the long ago learned lessons started to return. Now, they are happily married.

Even the coat of arms of Sao Tome and Principe consists of a Red-footed Falcon (in spite of the fact that this is clearly a Peregrine ) on the left and an African Grey Parrot on the right holding a shield with a palm tree.

After a quick breakfast, we were in the SUV and headed for Arthurs Pass, and what I am told is a very reliable location to find Kea’s , an unusual Alpine Parrot. Just before I go to the car, I heard the crazy squawking that could only be parrots.

Travelling slowly along the road in recent weeks we have been able to add a few new birds to the 2018 year list and they include the Pied Honeyeater , Black Honeyeater and Varied Lorikeet. Red-winged Parrots are often camouflaged until they fly across the track and there were several pairs along the track.

This all started way back in 2012 and several of us continued on in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 , 2016, 2017 and 2018. Despite observing Eastern Ospreys , Brahminy Kites and Red-winged Parrots on a regular basis around Broome all three bird species eluded us on Christmas Day! This is exactly what makes birding interesting!
