Add Common Tody-Flycatcher and several Hoffmann’s Woodpeckers and Brown-hooded Parrots to that picture, among many others. And yes, sometime in 2018, Mercedes and Harry started dating. Yet, with a coffee in one and binoculars in my other hand, the long ago learned lessons started to return. Now, they are happily married.

Additional helpful design features include the names of family groups against a yellow-and-white striped background on every page corner and having every bird image facing right (except for that Common Loon chick!), I’ve missed this information, especially when I travel to Los Angeles to visit my daughter and her family.

And, the One-page Index, a quick reference to locating major bird families, is placed in two locations–the front and the back of the book. Then again, try explaining to a new birder why falcons come after woodpeckers and before parrots! Family groups are briefly introduced with descriptions of their shared characteristics.

Jon Fjeldså’s contributions include many of the ducks, yellow-finches, and many other families where his images of Birds of the High Andes could be used. And, it has to be added that all of these artists and the additional seven artists contributed images that filled out plates of most of the bird families.

Within families, the species are arranged less taxonomically and more in line with “design and space considerations,” (Introduction), and on the plates themselves, species are arranged to facilitate comparison. I wish the flight images for the hawks, falcons, parakeets, and parrots were larger. 2018, 584 pp.,

March 1st, 2018 is a day that will just be wiped from the face of my calendar. We were picked up at the Christchurch airport by our family friend, Neville Blampied, who as it turns out, is an amazing local bird guide, disguising himself as a Professor of Psychology at the University of Canterbury. Hiding in plain sight were four Keas.

Grey-crowned Babblers are usually in family groups of eight and are easily heard as you travel along the track. Travelling slowly along the road in recent weeks we have been able to add a few new birds to the 2018 year list and they include the Pied Honeyeater , Black Honeyeater and Varied Lorikeet. Grevillea refracta-bird attracting.
