A Field Guide to the Birds: Giving Field Marks of All Species Found in Eastern North America was published in 1934 by Houghton Mifflin (note–Peterson was 26 years old), after being rejected by four publishers. Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species.

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

I have now flown to New Zealand, in search of as many new bird species as I can track down, at a semi-pedestrian pace, mixed with some normal tourist activities. March 1st, 2018 is a day that will just be wiped from the face of my calendar. Just before I go to the car, I heard the crazy squawking that could only be parrots.

Whenever you encounter one bird species near the edge of the track it is worth stopping, because invariably there are several species in the vicinity. Grey-crowned Babblers are usually in family groups of eight and are easily heard as you travel along the track. Grevillea refracta-bird attracting. Two distant Pied Honeyeaters.
