Barnacle Goose is my choice for the next bird, because we discovered one lone bird among all of the hundreds of Canada Geese , Greylag Geese and Eurasian Wigeon at Freiston Shore and it was as if it was a test to see if we would notice “the odd one out”! Canada Geese , Greylag Geese and Eurasian Wigeon.

New Year’s Day Birding at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary

On New Year’s Day 2016, our last day in California before heading back to New York, I was pleased for the chance to get out for a few hours in the morning to jump start the year list. Dabbling ducks, diving ducks, grebes, woodpeckers, shorebirds, waders, songbirds, raptors, flycatchers, hummingbirds: this gem of a sanctuary has it all!

The standout was the Cape Barren Goose , which not only has an awesome name but is also thought to be the last survivor of a lineage of geese that used to forage the grasslands of Antarctica before the whole place got all icy. So I was particularly pleased when one of the last birds I saw was a Spot-billed Duck, a local bird and lifer.

A day of clouds and colours

The expected Australian Pelicans were there and a handful of Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Eurasian Coot , Masked Lapwings and an Olive-backed Oriole was calling continuously. It is only during particularly wet seasons that Magpie Geese come to Broome and already they have started to arrive. Magpie Geese enjoying the flooded plains.
