The Italian wintering grounds are the WWF Oasis Laguna di Orbetello, where in February 2016 I was delighted to meet the flock. The individual I am pictured holding ( above ) was a friendly bird that (rather like a dog) seemed happy to be handled.

I had spent a fair amount of time listening to the night sky, trying to filter out barking dogs, the annoying rumble of trucks and motorcycles, and even the faint sounds of “The Simpsons” from neighborhood televisions with the hope of catching a calling cuckoo zipping overhead. Barra to be precise, just a few miles out of the city and adjacent to the Olympic Park for the 2016 games. This was very close to an access trail for the beach and it was continuously spooked back up onto the post by beach-goers and dog-walkers. How lucky then, that aforementioned bar was on the beach in Rio de Janiero.

One of the big changes in the UK birding scene is that in 1994 people would have driven across the UK to see a Little Egret and in 2016 they are abundant! In 1994 a lot of attention was being paid to the decline of Northern Lapwings , but in 2016 we were encountering them on a regular basis and it appears they may be faring a bit better now.

The photos in this post were taken in 2015 and 2016 – I was not only an amazingly attractive, almost young person then, but also a surprisingly bad photographer. A Red-billed Blue Magpie pretending to be a wet dog. I also only managed to see rather common bird species at Shennongjia, a nature reserve in Hubei province, China.
