Cone crops are good to excellent (poor on white pine) in central Ontario and Laurentian Mountains in southern Quebec with heavy crops extending east through the Adirondack Mountains of New York and northern New England States.

Considering the constant clicking of camera shutters it is undoubtedly the most photographed fulmar in the history of New York State. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was an incredibly cooperative Northern Fulmar photographed from the back of the boat during the pelagic trip he enjoyed on Saturday.

This weekend was great one for migration in the New York City region and a host of birds made their way in front of his binoculars. I was predictably pleased to encounter a couple of Black-throated Blue Warblers as well as a Red Fox at Cobbs Hill in Rochester. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was difficult to choose.

The first Elegant Tern ever spotted in New York State is an amazingly good bird, especially when it is one of eight tern species for the weekend. One sighting that came right on schedule for me was that of Ospreys on their nests all along the perimeter of Montezuma NWR.

Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was an odd one for late August in New York State: a Black Scoter , one of an even dozen hanging out at the Coast Guard Station at Jones Beach State Park. I feared the swifts had already abandoned this area for parts south. Seeing one lets me hold on to summer for just a bit longer!

To get his first ever King Rail , Corey left his house at 3:30 AM and drove two hours north to his home town of Saugerties, New York, where he spent an hour in close proximity to a very vocal King Rail in the Great Vly. After all, if you get one lifer in a weekend that bird clearly has to be your Best Bird of the Weekend!

He heard another on breeding territory in Sullivan County on Sunday and wondered if the bird he saw Friday had made its way north. If only we could recognize birds as individuals!

We New York birders should be awash in migrating wood-warblers, flycatchers, vireos, tanagers, and a host of other birds right now. Instead, the spring migration of 2013 has been largely a bust. Brant stay in New York until May because they like daffodils. It is 6 May. That is just not right at all.
