We have recently come across several Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles families around Broome. They are often in large groups in these areas when they are not breeding. Looks like it’s coming to us in 2012 now!! They generally lay four eggs, but we have only seen a maximum of three surviving chicks after a few days.

It is technically correct, and recently fashionable, to insist that any living animal is a member of the larger group that contains it phylogenetically, i.e., ancestrally, with that group often named after the known animal that roots the tree. So, for example, humans are apes. The point is, of course, that whales are not cows.

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Those that crossed the road first are waiting for the rest of the group at the other side. The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus. The others follow, some dozen animals in all.

I wrote of some birding areas around Derby in August 2012 and we hoped that we would be able to get to some of those this last week. Galahs and Red-tailed Black Cockatoos called noisily overhead and the honeyeater family were represented by Brown Honeyeaters, Yellow-tinted Honeyeaters and Rufous-throated Honeyeaters.

In a funny twist of fate, it seems that 2014 will be much the same as 2012 and 2013 have been, with family trips to somewhere in France and business trips to Indonesia and Kazakhstan. The biggest surprise is a small group of 4 Snow Buntings, very unusual for the Mediterranean coast but apparently not unheard of in the Camargue.
