As is often the case in birds, teenagers, and other living creatures, these charismatic colors play a prominent role in the booby’s breeding rituals.

Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. Thank you, Julie, for your excellent post!

The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. I was in contact with a group of birders for whom I arranged and guided an annual tour to Africa. Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . The rare Rufous Fishing Owl was one of the many species seen by the group here.
