The terms “hooded&# and “headed&# are often only loosely applied in birding nomenclature and I shall return to “ Brown-hooded Cowbird , Red-hooded Woodpecker and Black-chinned Oriole at a later date when the urge to be pedantic strikes again. The Rose-ringed Parakeet naturally occurs in two isolated areas: a thin strip across Africa just south of the Sahara, and south Asia where it is mostly found in India with smaller ranges in adjacent countries. As 2012 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 and 2011 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. an unhatched Red-throated Loon by Clare Kines Like Duncan, Larry Jordan had a difficult time picking his Best Bird of the Year but he eventually chose a woodpecker.

There is a Linnet at Kissena Corridor Park in Queens, and though I bird this park regularly, the Linnet, a bird regularly found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa and also named in a sweet song by Stephen Sondheim (Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Sweeny Todd) has eluded me. I needed a book showing a Linnet. A miscellaneous pot indeed!
