I was in contact with a group of birders for whom I arranged and guided an annual tour to Africa. million people (2010 census). Now that the colony is off limits for hunting, the population has grown and the village is benefitting tremendously from entry and guide fees, and a school is being built courtesy of conservation funds.

Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. More states will doubtless join the queue of those proposing hunts. It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.

Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. A group of us gathered to release her near the spot where she was found. She taught them how to hunt, and when they were released in the fall she stayed on her perch, dozing in the sun. She deserved her freedom.

One very helpful feature are the “Identification Tips” offered for groups of birds. Now, on to the books. Every one of these field guides is excellent.

They are often found roosting in small groups along the edges of lakes and riverine sandbars. In the northern winter, the bulk of the European and North African population migrate down into Africa, as far as South Africa, where large numbers frequent fields where they hunt for insects and rodents.
