Often someone buys an expensive purebred animal and then attempts to breed that animal to recoup their money. Puppies are great but often people are much happier getting a dog who is older, and whose size and temperament is a known quantity. In fact, nearly a quarter of all animals in shelters are purebred.

On the mainland they face predation from domestic cats, dogs, genets, mongoose and Cape Gulls which steal their chicks and eggs. The only other significant mainland breeding colony is based about an hour out of Cape Town on the east coast at a place called Betty’s Bay. In 2009 the population was recorded as 20,699 pairs.

We monitor the Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach each year and it can all be covered on foot or by bicycle-tide dependant! There have been over 60 eggs lost to predation each year from these 16 pairs of birds and only one successful breeding where the chick has been flying and dependant each year.

In October and November 2009 we spent time in Portland, Victoria with Grant’s work and it enabled us to see some new birds and animals along a very picturesque coast. The birds first arrived on the mainland in 1996 after breeding on the nearby island, Lawrence Rocks.

So, this pair (I assume there are two, though I only saw one today) of eagles has a territory including small dogs and stray children, baby coyotes, crows, but mainly squirrels and marmots right around its nest, and a major river backed up by a large dam about a mile or two away (the Mississippi) and several lakes.

Breeding behaviour and plumage was very apparent, but John Wise , an ex-pat Brit now resident in Orlando, told me that the birds’ activities had been held up for a couple of weeks during a cold snap that saw frosts in Florida.
