Moving to NYC, with so many incredible birding opportunities available by public transit, brought me back into the game. I flip through an old notebook, even ones where I just scribbled a date and a list of species names, and I often find myself being taken back to a given afternoon or at least a season. Enter eBird. It’s for me.

Birding Inirida, Colombia, a forest so young that birds still have no names, part 1

Discovered only in 2007 and photographed by Pablo Florez in 2016, in the latest field guide, the Lynx guide, this bird is literally called the “Unnamed Antshrike” (cover photo, a female by Dustin Chen). . I couldn’t help thinking: this is the way to grow up, not playing games in front of the computer screen. – Thamnophilus sp.

I subsequently helped with The Atlas of Wintering Birds in Britain and Ireland (1986), The New Atlas of Breeding Birds in Britain and Ireland: 1988-1991 , and most recently Bird Atlas 2007-11. One count I undertake every year is the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Big Farmland Bird Count.
