Broome’s Pied Oystercatchers are breeding again

Well, it is that time of year again and shorebirds are breeding. Hopefully all of the migratory shorebirds that left Roebuck Bay earlier this year have been successful at breeding in the Northern Hemisphere and will soon be heading back to our shores. I have also learnt to not count my chickens before they hatch.

A Fierce Cartoon Bird: Steller’s Sea Eagle on Hokkaido

The species is listed as Vulnerable – the estimated number of individuals is 4600-5100 (HBW), of which about 2000 winter on Hokkaido. The eagles do not breed on Hokkaido, spending only a few winter months there – so if you want to see courtship displays as described in here , you have to go further North a bit later in the year.

Birding around Chaka, Qinghai, China

Chaka is a small town, with just about 2000 people. Apparently, this is another bird species that feels not so certain about flying (many humans have similar feelings). Citrine Wagtails are rare in Shanghai but apparently quite common around Chaka, though unfortunately most of the ones we saw were not in breeding plumage.

The Spoon-billed Sandpiper, one of the world's most threatened birds, is rapidly heading towards extinction because young birds are being targeted for human consumption. In 2000, around 1,000 breeding pairs were known, but by 2009, the number had plummeted to just 120-220 pairs, a decline of 88%.

Time for the Flatback Turtle

I have observed Pied Oystercatchers breeding in an area on Cable Beach since July 2000. The birds have moved the nest site slightly each year depending on human interaction, but it is still confined to one small section of grey rocky outcrops with a great view for sitting for 28 days.
