It’s a good day to be a Double-crested Cormorant —at least for those living in the eastern United States. Birds in the 24 states east of the Mississippi River are now protected from mass culls by a recent court ruling. The cormorants have long been targeted by those who fish—or who raise fish on farms—for depleting fish stocks.

Normally she would be living somewhere in Europe or Asia, but she was born and raised in captivity in the United States. She lives with her handler, wildlife rehabilitator Lisa Acton, in upstate New York. But raising an ed bird means you can coochy-coochy them to your heart’s content. Check out her Facebook page.

Sales of duck stamps have funded the preservation of wetlands and other wildlife habitat, which in turn has supported an increase in waterfowl populations. Eventually, the pigeons, as it were, may come home to roost and the waterfowl and other wildlife, as well as hunters and bird watchers, will be sitting ducks.

Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). In the spring, key staging and stopover areas include Patagonia, Argentina; eastern and northern Brazil; the southeast United States; the Virginia barrier islands; and Delaware Bay.
