Rafting Possums Pose a Threat to Kapiti

10,000 Birds

Fishermen out near the island spotted a possum riding a floating log close to the island. It seems unlikely that the possum made it to the island, but it shows how vulnerable even the most important reserves are and how important it is to move towards a mammalian predator free New Zealand.

Bird art on grain silos

10,000 Birds

The main pollinators are the Honey Possum and the New Holland Honeyeater and they have both been painted onto the silos. As for the Honey Possum in the artwork they are a species that I do not have a photo of! It took 31 days for Amok Island to paint the grain silos in Ravensthorpe and 338 litres of paint.

Acclimatisation Societies of New Zealand

10,000 Birds

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. The Kaka Nestor meridionalis

10,000 Birds

The population is estimated at fewer than 10,000 birds, and new information indicates that the species has almost disappeared from the mainland except for a few intensely managed sites, and those valleys that remain free of possums.

You’re Not Helping

10,000 Birds

And New Zealand has a fairly aggressive programme of conservation measures in place to protect native wildlife by killing native species, again something I have defended on th is site. Even wiping out one species, like possums, or stoats, or hedgehogs is probably beyond current methods.

When conservation and animal rights collide

10,000 Birds

Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population. With the exception of species that number in the hundreds, conservation biologists are not as concerned with the fates of individual animals, it is only when such fates of many individuals are added up do they begin to worry.

Crows, Contest Killing, and Communication

10,000 Birds

Contest killing – where individuals or teams gun down as many of a single species as they can within a specific time period, with prizes going to the winner(s) – is legal all over the country. Foxes, coons, coyotes, possums and hawks all get a free meal that lasts for days on some of the larger shoots.”.
