Hello, We have some big fat rats in our backyard. At night I hear things on the roof but dont know if its possums, cats, rats, who knows. They seem to know each other. They hang out in one of our trees. Ive seen 3. I think they might be taking shelter in an old decrepit shed. There is no sign of them in the house.

Secondly, New Zealand had already experienced on wave of extinction due to the introduction or rats and human hunting. Brush-tailed Possums were brought from Australia to help start a fur industry. Possums still strip our native forests, ferrets and stoats and possums still devastate our native birds.

5 or 6 times over the last year I have found decapitated or otherwise "dissassembled" mice or small rats near or under my car. The first time I noticed it, it was actually a rat leg wedged through a bolt hole on my chassis that I noticed hanging under the car. Probably a rat. I moved into this house about a year ago.

I’ve written at length about the specific vulnerability of insular faunas and the catastrophic extinctions caused by the arrival of rats, mice, ferrets, cats and possums (amongst others), here in New Zealand fully half the pre-human bird species were lost.

Getting rid of rabbits and goats was something that had been done for many years, but it was generally thought that rats and cats would be impossible to remove from all but the smallest islands. Hit the rats hard and quick in a single hit. But while obvious this was also a much harder proposition. Insanely ambitious?

The highlight of the night was a Striped Possum, a large squirrel sized possum with black and white striped fur. There were also massive native White-tailed Rats and the Northern Brown Bandicoot. Most of these were easy enough to find on later dates,along with the smaller native Bush Rats, but I only saw one Striped Possum.

One final surprise was a Green Ringtail , an endemic possum. And one final treat was a Musky Rat-kangaroo , the smallest member of the macropod (kangaroo and wallaby) suborder, no bigger than a guinea-pig. Eastern Whipbirds where about and conspicuos, both in their voice an more surprisingly visually.
