Lacking the benefit of heated shelters, birds must heed that warning or perish. It might not look frightening to a birder but if we could ask pigeons, woodpeckers, and other birds how they felt abut the Bicolored Hawk, we would see their eyes go wide with fear and their feathers tremble. Here, as I kept my ears and eyes open for my target species for the day – Gilded Flicker — I noticed that many of these large columnar plants were blooming, attracting a wide range of birds that included White-winged Dove , Curve-billed Thrasher , and Gila Woodpecker.

Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill. Oh, there were Buffy Fish-owls. Then we flushed a hidden Diard’s Trogon , a flash of grey and crimson as it took off.

Filling the niche of the woodpecker here they use their small and long bills to explore and hammer through rotting wood and bark for insects. The sheltered bays of the Coromandel are home to another endemic, the Southern Merganser. Laughing Owl. We’ll also be on the lookout for the melodious North Island Piopio.
