This was more than 30 years after these types of anti-coagulants had first been implicated in the deaths of protected wildlife and pets, as well as the sickening of children. A wildlife rehabilitator friend, newly licensed, recently called to ask if he could feed a recovering Turkey Vulture anything besides defrosted rodents. Normally I feed vultures, as well as hawks and owls, defrosted mice and rats. He then ate a screech owl, a robin, two squirrels, a mourning dove, three chipmunks, and a rabbit.

Agonizing quandaries concerning invasive species are well-known to wildlife biologists. In Oregon, the Barred Owl is taking over Northern Spotted Owl territory and threatening that smaller bird’s survival. On the other hand, the extinction of the Spotted Owl is completely unacceptable.

Wildlife rehabilitators are not known for our bling. First of all: most of us don’t have much, because we spend all our money on gauze, antibiotics, and frozen rats. People who work with wildlife wearing nice clothes? People who work with wildlife wearing nice clothes? Wildlife rehab can be so metaphorical.
