Birding Balangshan, Sichuan, China (part 3)

10,000 Birds

High up at almost 4500 meters, some Alpine Accentors were posing in the sunshine, justifying the description in the HBW as “large, attractive accentor” (though eBird seems to disagree, instead characterizing the species as a “stocky, stout, and unobtrusive bird”). I side with the HBW on this issue.

The Uncommon Demise of a Wood Thrush in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

They don’t need to be professional bird killers either, predators only need to be in the right place at the right time. In Costa Rica, they can take the form of everything from toucans (think crows with giant shark inspired beaks) to herons and monkeys. The Collared Aracari is a small toucan with a sharp beak.

Sometimes, they even have the same species… I’m looking at you, House Wren ! While this low-density species may be declining across its wide range, BirdLife International still considers it of Least Concern. Of course I got great looks at the Red-ruffed Fruitcrow (as well as the Cauca Guan) right at the lodge.

End of the Road Birding in Costa Rica at Luna Lodge

10,000 Birds

Thanks to fortunate foresight, a lot of land was set aside in Costa Rica as national parks and protected areas (and some of these are easily accessed) but the best forest still happens to be at the terminus of the road and en route, you will be treated to species deficit birding in plenty of pastures. Lots of monkeys there too.

The Geladas of Ethiopia

10,000 Birds

This was the local name meaning “ugly” used for these primates by the people of the Gonder area in northern Ethiopia when the German naturalist Rüppell “discovered” this species for science in the 1830’s. Gelada communications include intense staring with raised eyebrows. Photo by Adam Riley.

Jinx Warbler Vanquished

10,000 Birds

A dirt road lead off to the right, past a sign for a gun club. I mumble the species’ name over and over something like this: that’s a *&$#^ Great Gray Owl! I gazed at the bird, its eyes looking right through me. I raised a bottle of beer in its honor, then headed for my hotel, satisfied that the day was mine.

Panama Trip Report: April 2017

10,000 Birds

In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. Yes, that’s Panama City to the right. Seriously, Panama raises the art of under-communication to new, deplorable heights. The view from our window at Radisson Summit.
